About…

My name is Kiera Pitts and I’m a painter and textile artist currently based out of Longmont, Colorado, and Berlin, Germany. I hold a BFA in Costume Design from DePaul University . I have been an artist in residence at Floating University in Berlin, at the Zukunftsdorf village at documenta15 in Kassel, Germany, and at the FilterDetroit residency in Hamtramck, Michigan.

My work centers on the forgotten stories and handicrafts of women historically —those not found in textbooks but passed from mother to child, embedded in fabric and memory. I’m currently focused on women’s relationships with the land during periods of man-made environmental upheaval in the U.S., specifically the years surrounding the Dust Bowl. Both natural and social forces have always shaped the lives of women, and despite hardship we persist, holding families and communities together, often without recognition.

My paintings and textile pieces are inspired by archival photographs, diary entries, folk songs, and artistic skills like patchwork quilting, knitting, and embroidery, passed down in my own family.

I exclusively use second hand materials for my textile pieces. I dye much of the fabric naturally with plant matter I forage locally like wild carrot and oak galls, or rescued food waste like onion skins and avocado pits.

Through this work, I am learning to listen—to the land and to the women who came before me. Whether it’s through paint or fabric, I aim to serve these stories through my own voice, storytelling for the next generation.
